BAM Nuttal, Bauer and Kier excavation and construction works in London
ONCE completed in 2019, Europe’s biggest construction project will have increased rail capacity across London by 10%.
The decade-long, £15bn Crossrail project – which was the feature of a three-part BBC documentary – has just passed the halfway point and has already racked up 44 million working hours.
Such was the challenge of building a new access shaft at Moorgate Station, major construction firms Bam Nuttall, Bauer and Kier joined forces to deliver the work. And together they enlisted our services to help them monitor progress.
The main challenge faced by the construction team was the lack of space, due to the number of Crossrail construction sites in the area. The site was constrained further by the close proximity of Hammersmith & City Line and the existing Moorgate Station ticket hall.
This also meant access to a fixing position for one of our long-term time-lapse camera systems was difficult. Our Technical Director Andy Piekarczyk worked from a cage – suspended from a crane over site – to safely and securely install a bespoke system and achieve the best vantage point and frame.
And our secure, web-based viewers meant everyone involved with the project could keep up-to-date with progress, no matter where they were in the world.
Work carried out at the site included the removal of deep foundations; the construction of a concrete diaphragm wall; installation of new 60m piles and excavation for a main shaft. The whole project will allow emergency access to the new ticket hall, as well as providing a means of ventilation.
More and more companies involved in the challenging rail industry are realising the potential of our expert services. Other rail projects we have been involved with include:
- The last major pinch-point being removed from the West Coast Main Line, in Staffordshire for Staffordshire Alliance Improvements Programme.
- Re-enforcement of a vital road bridge at in Manchester for Network Rail.
- Video capture at the iconic Hamilton Square railway station, Birkenhead.
- Short-term improvement works on the railway through Manchester Airport.
